Step 3: Getting Them Used to You
Timeframe: 1–4 weeks
(depending on many external factors)
Goals for this Step
– The crows tolerate you sitting close by
– They take food less than 2 meters from you
– They react positively to your voice
– You learn to recognize their alarm calls
Milestones / Checklist
– Sit calmly about 2 meters from the feeding spot
– Speak softly in the same tone each time
– Place food 1–2 meters from you
– Observe body language (raised feathers, tail position)
Warnings / Points of Attention
– Avoid holding eye contact too long – it can be seen as threatening
– Watch for other animals that might scare the crows
– Stop if you notice signs of stress (pecking, loud screeches)
Feeding Guide
Allowed – preferably avoid sugar, salt, and fat
(Remember: crows are omnivores and eat almost anything, but always choose the healthiest options)
– Unsalted peanuts
– Forest berries
– Boiled or scrambled eggs
– Mixed grains
Allowed in small amounts:
– Almonds
– Apple cubes
– Millet
– Oatmeal (cooled)
Not allowed / Avoid completely:
– Coffee grounds
– Chips
– Smoked meat
Tips & Tricks
– Listen for soft “coo” or “cluck” sounds – they often mean curiosity
– A relaxed posture (shoulders down) appears less threatening
– Repeat short phrases or sound patterns – crows remember word rhythms
Bonus Knowledge
Crows have individual “voices.”
When you respond gently, some may begin to call back to you.
Over time, you’ll learn to tell them apart and recognize when the crows you’re closest to want to communicate with you.
Document Your Progress
Take photos or record video, write down your observations, and check off your milestones as you go.
