Goals for this Step
– The crows begin to associate your sound and appearance with food
– Gradually shorten the distance safely
– Observe which crows are the boldest
– Start identifying individual personalities
Milestones / Checklist
– Choose a unique sound (click or whistle) and use it consistently
– Wear the same hat or jacket visibly each time
– Place food 3–4 meters from you
– Note which crows approach first
Warnings / Points of Attention
– Don’t feed when dogs are nearby
– Avoid sudden changes in clothing color or hat, which may confuse them
– Don’t keep food in noisy plastic bags
Feeding Guide
Allowed – preferably avoid sugar, salt, and fat
(Remember: crows are omnivores and will eat almost anything, but always choose the healthiest options)
– Peanuts (raw and unsalted)
– Unsalted walnuts
– Dry oats
– Cherries without pits
Allowed in small amounts:
– Peas
– Raisins
– Kale
– Cat or dog food
Not allowed / Avoid completely:
– Salted nuts
– Pasta with sauce
– Spiced meat
– Sugary snacks
Tips & Tricks
– Use binoculars to spot differences in plumage
– Make sure the crows have a safe landing area
– Talk softly – a calm voice helps build trust
Bonus Knowledge
Crows live in complex family groups and often have clear hierarchies.
Learn to recognize the alpha pair and the younger crows.
Remember that the alpha pair has the right to eat first, and they may act harshly toward others that try to jump the line — this is natural behavior.
Start by feeding the alphas to avoid unnecessary conflicts.
