Chased by crows – the crows are playing “follow the leader”

Kragerne følger kragemanden

Sometimes it looks both funny and downright silly when the crows follow me around on the beach and in the forest.
After years of experimenting with calling techniques, I finally learned a method they can understand, so I can call them, warn them, greet them, welcome them — and even “laugh” together with them.

It all happens through click sounds and body language.
When we greet each other, we bow our heads and make a boing sound followed by clicks.
My version is more like two or three clicks without the very deep boing sound — that one only they can make.
This is also how I say, “Yes, that’s for you,” when a crow approaches, gently bows its head, and makes the greeting sounds.
When I imitate the sound, that crow immediately hops closer to grab a snack.

I’ve also learned to make a “plop plooop” sound with my mouth, which I use to call them if they’re not nearby but somewhere else in the forest or on the beach.
After a few repetitions, they start calling back from different places — and sooner or later, they come flying in from all corners and hiding spots.
